Your roof is first struck. Whenever a hurricane strikes along the Treasure Coast, it is the roof of your house that separates your family and a wall of 130 miles per hour wind. Until the storm is named and headed their way, most homeowners do not consider that. The thing is, though, that by this time it is too late to do anything about it.
So now we can tell what really goes on up there when the wind gets on. We will go through the physics, the failure points and what you can do after the sky clears in a realistic way. It is not fear appeals. It is what your roofer wants you to know until you call him or her when it is the season.
What Wind Speed Does to a Shingled Roof
Hurricanes are categorized according to the Saffir-Simpson scale and the difference between a Category 1 and a Category 4 does not only represent a number. These thresholds are closely monitored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and according to their data, the strong winds of 74mph represent the beginning of the hurricane conditions. That’s the baseline. Once at a Category 3, you are looking at winds of 111-129 mph, which are capable of causing severe structural damage to homes.
What does that wind do to your shingles? It is not the wind which is to hurt. It’s the pressure. As air passes rapidly over your roof, it forms lift, in a manner of an airplane wing. The wind attempts to draw the shingles and they work off the deck and the quicker the wind, the greater the pull. Unless your shingles are sealed down, or they are newer and tough, they curl at the edges. When one side goes up, the wind catches it under and the next wind tears it off. This is what you end up with, following a storm, when you have the classic bare-plywood look.

The Three Points Where Roofs Actually Fail
The same three weak spots, when I discuss them with contractors and read the report of post-storm inspection, appear again and again. Being familiar with them can lead you to avoid a tempest, not to react to it afterwards.
1. The Fascia and Soffit
This is the stripping around the outline of your roof, and the first thing to fall into. Any wood that has been out in the Florida sun ten years is likely to be dry and cracked and glued together with paint. The wind blows the stuff off, and when it blows away rain leaks into the rafters. Not so glamorous, but the water damage begins there.
2. The Ridge Line
The two slopes meet at the top of your roof and it gets beaten. When the ridge cap shingles are not nailed on properly, they come off like a banana. On their departure you have an open seam at the topmost part of your dwelling-house, and consequently all the rain that falls on that spot courses down to your attic. 3. The Flashing Around Penetrations
All your vents, skylights, and chimneys are holes in your roof which people attempted to close. The metal that does the sealing is called flashing and is nailed in place with sealant. Both break up on recurring wind vibration. The sealant gets cracking, the nails get loose, and the subsequent storm discovers the loophole. It is that type of leak that appears as a brown stain on your ceiling, two weeks after the storm, not in the storm itself.
Why Debris Makes Everything Worse
Wind is only half the story. The other half is what the wind is carrying. During a major storm, your roof isn’t just fighting physics, it’s a target for tree branches, loose lumber from a construction site down the street, and whatever else was sitting in someone’s yard when the wind picked up.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been documenting this pattern for years. Their post-storm assessments routinely find that the most common cause of roof failure isn’t the wind itself. Older than that or have had some repairs that were not the same as those when it was installed then you are increasing your chances of risk. When this season’s hurricane tracker starts showing those spaghetti models heading toward Florida, you’ll know exactly what to look for. You’ll inspect the fascia, check the ridge, and make sure the flashing is sealed. And you’ll do it in June, not in August, because that’s what separates the homeowners who handle this well from the ones who are still waiting on repairs in November.
