Not read about. Not casually considered over coffee. Changed. That’s a genuinely different category of behavior than typical internet research, and it’s worth breaking down exactly what “changed” means in practice, action by action.

Why This Number Is Bigger Than It Sounds

Start with the baseline number, because it sets up everything that follows.

Forty-six percent of adults have used AI to answer a medication-related question at all, according to a national survey of 1,000 U.S. adults conducted earlier this year. Of that group, roughly half went further than just asking a question and reading an answer.

That’s the part that separates this from ordinary internet research most people already do without thinking twice about it. Looking something up is passive. Adjusting a dose, timing, or whether you take something at all is active, and it’s happening based on an algorithm’s output rather than a clinician’s actual judgment about a specific patient’s situation.

Here’s the specific breakdown of what “changed” meant for people who acted on AI guidance, according to the same national survey.

That last figure is the one worth sitting with for a moment before moving on. A quarter of people who acted on AI guidance did so without consulting a healthcare professional at all. Three-quarters at least brought it up with someone. That’s a meaningful safety net, but it still leaves a substantial group making unsupervised changes to their own regimen.

The Age Pattern Nobody Expected

Here’s where the data gets genuinely counterintuitive, and it complicates the usual assumption about who’s actually most at risk in this situation.

Younger adults use AI for medication questions the most, and they verify it the most too. Adults aged 18 to 24 reported the highest usage rate at 56%, and 80% of that specific group said they verified the information afterward before acting on it. Older adults told a noticeably different story. Only 38% of adults 55 and older used AI for medication research at all, but just 56% of that smaller group actually verified what they were told before trusting it.

In other words, the age group least likely to double-check an AI answer is also, proportionally, more likely to be managing multiple prescriptions, chronic conditions, and drug interactions where an unverified answer carries genuinely higher stakes. Younger, more frequent AI users appear to be applying more scrutiny to it, not less scrutiny as their usage climbs. That inverts what most people would probably guess going into this data.

The Accuracy Gap Behind the Convenience

The reason verification matters this much comes down to what actually happens when nobody bothers to check.

A 2024 study examining ChatGPT’s medication-related answers found it rarely cited real sources at all, and when it did, every single sourced response contained at least one fabricated citation invented from nothing. A 2025 study found AI was completely accurate on medication questions only 19% of the time, a genuinely low bar for something people are actively acting on.

Convenience is the reason people reach for AI anyway, despite that accuracy gap. Nearly half cited it as more convenient than the alternative, well ahead of any other reason given in the survey. An algorithm doesn’t judge you for asking something basic, doesn’t require booking an appointment, and answers at any hour of the night without complaint. The tradeoff is that the confident-sounding answer on your screen might be built on nothing solid at all underneath it.

What a Real Physician Is Actually Seeing

This isn’t hypothetical risk. It’s already showing up in exam rooms.

One physician who contributed to the survey described a patient who stopped taking metformin entirely after asking AI about potential side effects, despite not experiencing any symptoms at all up to that point. After a conversation about the actual, relatively low risk involved in her specific case, the patient resumed the medication, a decision that would have been better made before stopping rather than after the fact.

Physicians themselves are adopting AI heavily behind the scenes, with roughly two-thirds now using it for certain healthcare tasks according to survey data from the American Medical Association. The gap is that patients rarely see this happening, since it’s largely used for documentation and research rather than patient-facing conversations. Most people assume AI in healthcare means something visible. Right now, it mostly isn’t.

Where the Line Actually Belongs

None of this means AI has no place in medication questions at all, and that’s not really the argument being made here. The FDA’s own guidance on talking with a pharmacist emphasizes that a real conversation accounts for a patient’s full history, something a generic AI answer typically can’t do unless every relevant detail gets typed in correctly and completely.

General questions, what a medication is for, whether a side effect is common, are reasonably low stakes. Questions involving an actual dose change, starting or stopping something, or a decision made under fear rather than confirmed information deserve an actual clinician, not an algorithm’s best guess dressed up in confident language.

The 49% figure isn’t a reason to panic about AI generally. It’s a reason to be precise about which questions it’s actually suited to answer, and which ones still need a human on the other end.
